Northern Worlds

Northern Worlds

– A new research priority on the National Museum

‘Northern Worlds’ is the theme of a new research programme at the National Museum. Throughout the next four to five years about 35 scholars from all departments of the museum will coordinate their research in order to explore relations between man, climate and environment from the late palaeolithic until present in the circumpolar and northern temperate zones.

The initiative is organized as a ‘centre without walls’ and Bjarne Grønnow is appointed coordinator of this comprehensive programme.

An important part of the collections of the National Museum are from northern societies. Through 200 years of research and collecting the museum has built up a unique expertise including archaeology, anthropology, conservation and natural sciences. This accumulated knowledge will be developed further during the process. The programme focuses on the following main issues:
- Late Glacial Denmark: Man and Climate
- The Expansion of Agriculture into the Northern Worlds
- Communication, Trade and Cultural Markers
- When Climate Changes: Consensus, Conflict, Control
- Development of Conservation Techniques in Northern Areas
