Industrial objects are large, often immovable and comprise metals and other materials including plastics. Because of their size and weight they are usually situated outdoors, in hangars or other areas without environmental control. They therefore need protection from sun, rain and wind if they are to be preserved for future generations. A research project at the National Museum between 2007 and December 2010 has two focus areas.
The first aim is to identify surface coatings which protect iron and steel from corrosion for at least 3 years. Such a period will reduce the present maintenance costs for industrial collections. Suitable coatings do not change the original appearance of objects or limit any movement or function they have. Around 20 coatings including paints, lacquers, polishes and waxes have been applied using standard techniques to standard steel panels and are being exposed to the Danish weather for 3 years in Brede. The most effective coatings will be applied to objects in the National Museum´s collections and to those of English Heritage as part of a pilot project. The second focus area is cleaning of plastic components in industrial objects including switches, cables, upholstery and vinyl flooring. Because solvents tend to damage plastics irreversibly, one method of particular interest is the use of supercritical carbon dioxide liquid and ice which evaporate immediately after contact with surfaces and are largely replacing organic solvents today.
Photos: Three panels of each coating are being exposed to the Danish weather for 3 years in Brede. The panels were mounted on two frames in June 2009, one of which is shown in June 2009 (upper) and one year later. Some panels show discolouration and corrosion.
